How is Periodontal Disease Diagnosed?

Periodontal disease is diagnosed through a series of tests. First, your dentist will check the depth of the gum pockets between your teeth and gums. Next, they will check for inflammation, bleeding, loose teeth, and bone loss. The findings from the test will determine the stage of periodontal disease and recommend treatment.

Stages of Periodontal Disease?

The first stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis. Gingivitis can be characterized by inflamed, tender, bleeding gums, and plaque build-up.

The second stage is periodontitis. This can be characterized by plaque hardening into calculus (tartar), gum recession, deepening gum pockets, and early stages of bone loss.

The final stage of periodontal disease is advanced periodontitis. This stage is characterized by destruction of gums, bone, and ligament tissues, loosening and loss of teeth, and more severe bone loss.

If you think you might be suffering from one of the stages of periodontal disease, we can help. Contact Family & Implant Dentistry of Boynton Beach today to learn more and schedule an appointment.
