In traditional root canal therapy, the full pulp is removed, along with any other infected tissue. However, sometimes it is not possible to remove the entire pulp. When this is not possible or previous root canal therapy has failed, an apicoectomy is recommended.
An apicoectomy is a minor dental treatment. During an apiceoctomy, the infected tip of a tooth root is removed and then sealed to prevent further infection. Even though an apicoectomy is considered surgery, recovering from it is easier than recovering from root canal treatment.
